The Elements of Lighting Design
There are various systems of lighting that all work together to create the visual picture in your home:
Decorative Lighting: Sconces, chandeliers, table lamps. Decorative lighting is usually determined by the interior designer, although we have worked on homes where the owner did not want any decorative lighting and all illumination can from recessed lighting.
General Lighting: This creates an ambient glow in the space and may come from decorative lighting, recessed downlights, or a combination of the two.
Accent Lighting: These are systems of recessed adjustable downlighting that spotlight art, sculpture and areas of visual interest. We call it “focal glow.”
Architectural Lighting: Lighting can be designed to accent or highlight interesting features in the architecture, such as vaulted ceilings, niches, columns, and soffits.
Task Lighting: Lighting in the kitchen or at a home office desk where proper illumination is essential may require additional specific lighting systems.
Exterior & Security Lighting: How does your house look at night? Is it welcoming? Is it possible for you to walk around your residence easily after dark? Is your landscape accented to increase your night-time view?
